Cationic Additives

Polyquaternary ammonium polymers:

A water soluble polymer containing many ionic charge transfer and water holding (hydrophilic) sites.

Useful for attaching anionic dyes to the ink jet coating surface as the ink penetrates into the coating.

Properties:     Properties:

pH: 6.0 - 7.0

Solids: 40%

Density: 9.0 lbs./gallon

Brookfield Viscosity (20 rpm): 1000 - 3000cps

Copolymers of vinylimidazolium methochloride and vinylpyrrolidone:

A series of water miscible polymers of varying cationicity, containing many ionic charge transfer and water holding sites. Useful for attaching anionic dyes to the ink jet coating surface as the ink penetrates into the coating.

Properties:

pH of a 10% water solution: 4.5- 8.0

Solids: 20 - 40%, depending on type

Density: 8.5 - 9.0 lbs./gallon

Quaternized-vinylpyrrolidone/dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate copolymer:

Water miscible cationic polymer containing many ionic transfer and water holding sites. Useful for attaching anionic dyes to the ink jet coating surface and absorbing ink vehicle.

Properties:      Properties:

pH (as is): 8.5

Solids: 20%

Density: 8.5 lbs./gallon

Levels of Cationic Additives used in Ink Jet Coatings:

The addition levels of cationic additives in ink jet coatings vary widely depending upon the following factors;

- Cost

- Type of ink jet media produced (coated versus size press treated)

- Coating formulation (interference with other coating ingredients)

- Coating application method (tolerance to deviations from thixotropy)

In general, most cationic additives are used in amounts of 5 parts on 100 parts pigment or less. There are cases where a cationic polymer which incorporates a binder or water absorptive component will be used at levels of up to 50 parts on 100 parts pigment. These levels are usually reached only in resin based, clear ink jet receptive coatings.
